United Theatre Review

About

United Theatre Review is for curious theatregoers who want to notice more than the plot. We look at how plays, performers, spaces and stagecraft work together, without assuming specialist knowledge or treating every choice as a hidden clue.

What we cover

Our subjects include dramatic forms and language, acting choices, theatre spaces, stage design, performance conventions and the history of going to the theatre. We favour lasting questions that help readers make sense of a production, whether they are regular theatregoers or finding their bearings in a theatre for the first time.

How we look

We pay attention to what is present and how it works: where an audience sits, what a stage makes visible, how an actor uses a pause, or how a scene changes direction. We distinguish observation from interpretation and leave room for different readings. Not every prop is a clue, and not every pause conceals a secret.

Who it is for

The publication is for anyone interested in how live theatre is made and received. You do not need a theatre vocabulary to start. We explain terms when they matter and keep the focus on details readers can carry into their next encounter with a play.

Our point of view

The stage rewards a closer look

Theatre is made in the details: a shift in space, a held pause, a light that changes what we notice.
